The Force Awakens ended with Rey finding Luke and holding the lightsaber that once belonged to him. This left many fans asking what happens next, and now Episode VIII director Rian Johnson has come out and said “I don’t want to skip ahead two years. I want to see the very next moment of what happens.”
This is the first time ever, that the next Star Wars movie picks up immediately where the last one left off.
Johnson said that relationship between Rey and Luke is “a large part of the movie”. With another big thing being Luke’s decision on what to do now. With the First Order rising and the New Republic crippled. And also the fact that his nephew killing his own father, Luke’s good friend. That’s a lot for Luke to take in. Johnson also promised to reveal why Luke has been on Ahch-To, the assumed home of the first Jedi temple.
Rey’s parentage has been a major question for fans, but Johnson teased that for Rey herself, discovering her connection to the Force is the more immediate issue.
“Part of what she’s dealing with is the realization that she has this power and this gift. She’s taking her first step to coming to terms with this thing inside her that she never knew was there and is just starting to reveal its potential.”
Episode VIII will be released on December 15th.
