Earlier this month it was announced that Woody Harrelson will be joining Alden Ehrenreich, Emilia Clarke and Donald Glover in the untitled Han Solo spin-off movie. While Ehrenreich and Glover have been confirmed to play Han Solo and Lando Calrissian, we have no word on who Clarke is going to play. But now Harrelson has come out and said, that he will actually play Han Solo’s mentor, Garris Shrike!
Harrelson was in Sundance Film Festival, in Park City, Utah, promoting his new movie Wilson. During an interview with Variety, he was asked on if he can confirm that he’ll be playing Han Solo’s mentor in the upcoming spin-off movie. And he responded “Yeah, I am”
Garris Shrike was first introduced in the novel The Paradise Snare, by author A.C. Crispin in 1997. After Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm the novel became non-canonical, but now Lucasfilm will bring the charecter back in to the canon story. Shrike was the man who raised young Han Solo, and helped to turn Han to the smuggler we know and love.Shrike had a strategy using orphans to rob and steel for him, and Han was one of these kids.
Harrelson could actually be playing the villain in the Han Solo movie, since the two wound up having a very abusive, antagonistic relationship in the legends-universe.
But then again it would make no sense for the directors to just adapt the stories that legends-fans already know. Lucasfilm has made some major changes to legends characters that have been re-introduced to the canon: for example Grand Admiral Thrawn, who was re-introduced in the Star Wars Rebels season 3.
You can read the full transcript of the conversation down below.
Woody, we have to ask you a Star Wars question. It’s been revealed that you’re the Han Solo mentor. Can you confirm that it’s Garris Shrike? Or what can you tell us?
Woody Harrelson: Confirm what?
That you’re playing the character of Garris?
[Others in the interview talk while Harrelson thinks]
Woody Harrelson: Yeah, I am.
