We’ve once again had a lot of news about The Last Jedi during the past few days. And as I didn’t have time to write about each and every one of them, I decided to collect the important ones to one post.
Let’s get the biggest one out of the way. Pablo Hidalgo has confirmed that the “Skywalker-lightsaber” isn’t considered as Anakin’s or Luke’s anymore by Lucasfilm’s marketing department. They consider it to be Rey’s lightsaber now. So we might not see Rey building her own lightsaber anytime soon. Hidalgo also said that the lightsaber called to her for a specific reason.
It was also revealed, that we might not learn about who Snoke is in The Last Jedi. David Kamp said that “I asked Rian Johnson about Snoke – Who/what is he? – And Rian was fairly up front in saying that Snoke is not a character he particularly gets into in The Last Jedi.
And we got the identities of Laura Dern’s and Benicio Del Torro’s characters. Laura Dern will be playing Vice Amilyn Holdo, a new character in the saga. Holdo is an important figure in the resistance. And Del Torro’s character apparently doesn’t even have a name, he is just referred as “DJ”. Johnson said “You’ll see – there’s a reason we call him DJ.” DJ is described as “a shady character with unclear alligiances.”
Johnson also stated that many characters have to make difficult decisions in Episode 8 by saying that “I saw it as the job of this middle chapter to challenge all those characters – let’s see what happens when we kick the stool out from under them.”
Adam Drived teased that Kylo could be regretting his actions from TFA in TLJ stating that “I feel like almost everyone is in that rehabilitation state at the beginning of The Last Jedi… Maybe that’s where Kylo Ren is starting from. His external scar is probably as much an internal one.”
And Johnson revealed that there will be no big romances igniting in The Last Jedi. “There will be no one-to-one equivalent of Han and Leia, burning, unrequited love. In our story, that’s not a centerpiece.” Sorry to all of you Rey/Finn, Finn/Poe and Rey/Kylo shippers, you’re not going to see that love story ignited in The Last Jedi. Maybe in Episode IX, but for now it’s a no.
John Boyega talked about Finn wielding a lightsaber in The Force Awakens. “He kind of held his own for a bit against Kylo Ren, who’s obviously kind of like a Sith. It’s strange to know that Finn stood tall for that long.” Is he hinting that Finn might be a Force-sensitive?
Kathleen Kennedy also revealed when Lucasfilm will make a decision, on what the next anthology movie (after the Han Solo movie) will focus on. “We have a couple of things right now that we’re circling, and we’ll make a decision between the two shortly. It’s probably for 2020 and we will make a decision by June.”
Only a bit over six months until The Last Jedi hits theaters, so we’re most likely hearing even more about the movie in the coming months!
